When I am teaching students whose first language is not English, I like to end the class by playing a song whenever possible.
I give my students a modified lyrics sheet with missing words, and I ask my students to listen to the song and write in the missing lyrics. I try to choose songs from various genres and periods in music history. Earlier this month, I spent some time preparing a lyrics sheet for “Blowin’ in the Wind,” the song written by Bob Dylan in 1962. So when I read a few days later that Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in Literature, I was happy to have this additional information to use when I introduce the song to my students.
Not long after hearing about Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize, I learned some more about the Nobel Prizes and Laureates by reading an interesting article entitled “Six of America’s 2016 Nobel Laureates are Immigrants,” by Wendy Feliz. Bob Dylan might not be an immigrant (I believe he was born and raised in Minnesota, USA), but you should check out this article if you are curious about how the U.S. benefits from immigration.
